Props
Props: Bike, Not pad and pencil, flowers, dog
Costume: Sixties/fifties style, greased back hair, lace top
The use of the fifties/sixties stylized costumes could have been
used to make the characters look more youthful and innocent as this was the
time in history when young people were starting to make in impact n the world
by protests, rebellions and music.

Location
In this video the locations that are used are derelict, uncared
for and old. The video features an old
dock, wasteland, country roads and a city center.
The song is titled ‘No Hope’ from the album ‘Coming of Age’ and
features lines such as ‘I don’t care about anybody when I don’t have my own
life figured out’. So the use of these run down locations give the theme of a
lost cause and ‘No hope’ as if nothing can be done to revive them.

Characters
Young Boy: 14/15
Older Girl: 18/19
Band Members: Justin Young, Arni Arnason, Freddie Cowan, Pete
Robertson
The story in the video is about a boy trying to impress a girl who
is older than him so the characters are appropriate. The band members
represent the men in the girl’s age group and by slapping him in the back of
the head they show how both ends of the same generation do not get on. This
narrative is very in keeping with the album title coming of age.
Lighting
Throughout the majority of the video, the lighting is bright
sunshine. However the young boy is shown in sunshine and all the other
characters are in the shaded areas such as under the arches of a building or
inside their house.
Lighting, like many aspects of this video’ is used to highlight
the innocents of the younger boy and of youthfulness and show the slightly
darker part of life, adolescence.

Cuts
The story cuts between shot of the main character (young boy) and
the lead singer (Justin Young) singing indirectly to camera. These two scenes
do however cross each other as he rides his bike past the band. The opening
shot of the video is also the final moments of the video.
Featuring the band in the video gives them the opportunity to show
what the band is about and what they want in the video. The cut between the
two scenes makes the video seem as if it is the story from the singer, Justin
Young’s, past. Using the opening shot
twice gives the video a more rounded feel and raises questions in the viewers
minds that are later answered in the video.
Transitions
There are no transitions used other straight cuts from scene to
scene.
Transitions like fades or dissolves are often used to signify time
passing but in this video this is achieve by cutting back and forth from the
singer and the narrative making it seem as if it is his past.
Effects
The only effect used on the footage is the black and white filter.
The use of black and white, better highlights the lighting of the
shots and obviously makes the video seem older as if it is a vintage film.
Camera Angles
In the video the majority of the story is told with mid to long
shots, but the key parts of the story are close ups such as the girl smelling
the flowers and the boy watching her. There are also point of view shots and
shots taken from slightly above looking down at the singer (Justin Young).
The close ups of the boy and the girl shows how focused and eager
he is to see her reaction and also emulates feelings of love. The high angle
shot of Justin Young could represent an adult or parent talking down to a
child or teenager, which again relates the theme of the album ‘Coming of
Age’.
