Record Label

Domino Records

The Arctic monkeys are signed to the record label Domino Records, and have been for the majority of the band’s existence. Laurence Bell and partner Jacqui Rice started Domino records in 1993 and the label was originally created to showcase the beginning of the Britpop movement in the early 90s.  Domino Records are an independent label based in London and have sign the likes of Franz Ferdinand, The Kills, Last of the Shadow Puppets, Arctic Monkeys and Hot chip.

When the band was starting out the band chose an independent record label because other labels that were interested in the band wanted them to change their sound. But domino records allowed them to produce the music the way that the band wanted. After the smash hit debut album ‘What ever people say I am that’s what I’m not’ the label encouraged the band to give the fans what they wanted and make another record with the same fresh sound. But after the equally well received album ‘Favorite worst nightmare’ the band become more mature and after all the success the started working along side Joshua Homme from Queens of the stoneage, they changed the image and sound of the band claiming that it was ‘the music we’ve always wanted to do’. Because of the bands stature, Domino Records allowed them to make the change.

Even from the album art work you can clearly see a change in the marketing and image of the band. The top row containing imagery of youth and adolescence and the bottom row which is much more serious, with iconic, abstract imagery.
